The Dreaded Notice: Your Health Insurance Premium is increasing

Paying for your own health insurance may never be fun, but once you get into a groove it usually is not that big of a deal. Of course, just as soon as you get used to paying one premium the dreaded letter arrives in the mail: your premium is increasing once again. Your health insurance company has the right to do this. That being said, it never makes it any easier. If your premium increases you are sure to be upset, even if you knew it was coming at some point in time.

What can I do about this? The first thing you may want to do is call your health insurance carrier to see what it is all about. At the very least you want to get an explanation of what is going on. There is a good chance that the letter will include all this information, but there is nothing wrong with calling for clarification anyway. It is your right to know why your health insurance premium is increasing.

Should I change policies or companies? This depends on whether or not you can afford the new premium. You may only have to pay a few extra dollars every month. This is not that bad and something you can probably budget for. But if the cost of your health insurance policy sky rockets you may need to think twice about sticking with it. There may be a more affordable option floating around somewhere.

There is nothing worse than receiving a letter from your health insurance company telling you that your premium has increased. If you receive this type of notice you should call your company, and then decide what move to make next.
